Good Looking Breville Barista Express Dimmer Mod
Good Looking Breville Barista Express Dimmer Mod
IMPORTANT - Anytime you are not pulling a shot the dimmer needs to be turned all the way to the right for 100% power or it will affect the steaming performance and the warmup cycle. Only use the dimmer when pulling a shot and then right after pressing the button to stop the shot turn it back to max power.
First step is follow this guide to the 4:30 mark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQgkZiNkNAE&ab_channel=Hoon%27sCoffee
Instead of installing the switch on the outside of the machine with tape or screws like many youtube videos reccomend I found a perfect spot inside the BBE that will let it sit flush. It has no effect on the quality of the mod or espresso itself but I think it looks much nicer, and you could go one step further and find a matching brushed metal knob online somewhere.
Note - this guide only works for this exact switch https://www.homedepot.com/p/Westek-200-Watt-Full-Range-Replacement-Dimmer-Black-6077B/100644824?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&srsltid=AR57-fCmQBcR8E0FWUJBAOPzeoCvxYJb2GBKwLhd4oiIJ1OuFGo3gAU3YEg
There are some similar looking knockoff switches for $5 on ebay and amazon but I have no clue if those carry any safety ratings.

Now this is where you'll need to whip out a hot knife or a soldering iron you don't mind ruining. The BBE and most models have a thin metal shell backed up by a thick and super durable plastic matrix, that is very difficult to dremel out without risking damage to the components nearby.
I was able to use double sided tape on the inside of the left side of the machine (looking from the back) on the opposite side of the grinder, and made a rectangular mark of where it fit. I won't include measurements because I know there are multiple generations that might have different switch placements.
I used a cut up piece of cardboard to protect all the wires and tubes on the right side of the picture, and then very carefully gouged out a trench around where the dimmer will be located. After popping out the plastic I was able to very easily drill a series of holes until the threaded section of the switch fit perfectly in it.
After tightening the nut included with the dimmer switch I just re-assembled the machine and the internal mounting really only adds 5-10 minutes onto the total project time.
